Running head: TYPES OF SECURITY 1
Typesof securities and security measures implemented to address thethreats
Homelandsecurity refers to the civilian and government effort to enforcehomeland or domestic defense against external or internal securitythreats and aggression posed by terrorism or natural disasters. Thisform of security is focused on emergency response and preparednessagainst extreme local and international security threats(Ortmeier, 2013). Threats addressed by homeland security are similar to thoseaddressed in transport security, information security and personalsecurity. The main difference is that homeland security primarilyfocuses on extreme threats related to terrorism of naturalcalamities. Homeland security is enhanced through strict measures andregulations on transport security, information and environmentsecurity.
Informationsecurity is a means through which security measures are adopted todefend an authorized access to sensitive information. In the wake oforganized crime, cyber-crime and terrorism information security hasbecome an important strategy of enhancing homeland security. In thisway, information security shares similar threats targeted by homelandsecurity in preventing any access to sensitive data being accessed, damaged or obstructed by unseen enemies. Furthermore, informationsecurity ties with homeland security on the threat posed by anauthorized expose, damage or obstruction of personal data. The maindifference is that information security focuses primarily on thesecurity of data while in storage or transit to reduce an authorizedaccess and damage (Ortmeier,2013).Information security is enhanced through strict administrativecontrols over data security at all levels of the economy. This isalso done through strict measures that regulate network security.
Transportsecurity deals with measures taken to enhance passengers andtransport crews safe, as well as the carrier equipment. Publictransport security is now a major issue in enhancing security atdomestic level and abroad. Terrorism is a major threat to transportsecurity as well as homeland, personal, environmental andinformational security (Ortmeier,2013).Transport security is enhanced through strict prohibitive costs, strict screening and documentation at terminals and extra vigilanceon passengers while on transit (Fisher & Halibozek, 2012).
Environmentalsecurity focuses on enhancing safety in areas such as homeland, personal, information and transport security against unforeseenenvironmental threats. In this way, environmental security ensuresthat threats to environment are prevented. Threats posed to theenvironment have a direct impact on homeland security as well asother forms of security. For instance, threat of the environment bybio-terrorism has direct effects on homeland security. However, environmental security focuses primarily on preventing harmfuleffects directed or associated with the environment for causing masssufferings (Ortmeier,2013).Environmental security is remedied through strict international andnational policies against environment pollution. In addition, environmental security is enhanced through assessing means ofpreventing environmental threats such as bio-terrorism and agroterrorism (Fisher & Halibozek, 2012).
