Addictioncounseling competencies refer to procedures developed for improvingthe general competencies of professionals in the treatment ofsubstance use and disorder. The workforce under a matrix priorityprogram develops the strategies. The program tends to be under thesubstance abuse and mental health service administration (SAMHSA).SAMHSA publishes a comprehensive list of 123 relevant skills. Thecompetencies guide counselors in the treatment of substance abuseactually. The body had established TAP 21, which evaluates anddevelop on addiction counseling curricula. It also advises studentsand tends to assess the counseling proficiencies (Magaletta,Patry, Gross, Butterfield, McLearen, Patterson &amp Norcross,2011).

Thecurrent TAP 21 has not been changed from the original one. However,the KSAs have undergone changes due to new thinking in the currentfield. They assist in the treatment and evaluation in clinicalplanning. They have been revised to reflect on the current changes inthe field. The TAP series in the SAMHSA tends to provide a flexibleformat for timely transfer of the relevant and technical information.

It iswidely distributed by various bodies such as National Clearinghousefor the Alcohol and Drug Information Networks (NCADI). Similarly, theATTC network is used in technology transfer prior to publication ofTAP 21. In addition, the ATTC facilitates the recruitment ofqualified addiction treatment practitioners. It further enhancestheir academic preparation and professional development ofopportunities in substance abuse and treatment field. The bodycollaborates with the diverse state, regional, local partners,international and national (Magaletta,et al., 2011).

TheNational Curriculum Committee emphasized on various characteristicsof competencies after recognizing the need. It launched a model thattends to direct the general KSAs useful to practitioners. The modelswere to be used by practitioners in dealing with substance usedisorders. Similarly, they were to explain the needs of theprofessional substance abuse treatment counselors. The first model ofthe KSAs tends to address the generic. It comprises of four discretemodels. They include understanding addiction, application topractice, nursing education, and professional readiness. The modelsseek to address both knowledge and skills that all disciplines need(Magaletta,et al., 2011).For example, social work, corrections, pastoral guidance, medicineand social welfare. The disciplines tend to deal directly withpersons with substance use and disorder.

Thesecond part of the model seeks to address the practice dimensions orprofessional training needs. In addition, it involves the addictioncounselors. Each practice dimension tends to include a set ofcompetences. Similarly, within each competency there is an outline ofthe necessary KSAs effective addictions.

Competencieshave extensive applications either in curriculum or courseevaluation. They design higher education prospects, student advising,assessment, and supervision, personal, professional developments, andassessment of competent practices. In addition, they developprofessional design and programs for continuing education programs(Magaletta,et al., 2011).There are various competencies used in the substance use andaddiction treatment. Some of them include:

CompetencyI: The understanding variety of theories and models of addiction andother related problems to substance use. It involves knowledge suchas scientific and theoretical model basis from psychology, sociology,and medicine. In addition, it entails attitudes such as openness toinformation and appreciation of the complexity.

CompetencyII: This describes the understanding and application of the researchand the outcome data. The knowledge part involves the researchmethods in behavioral and social sciences. In addition, the attitudesconsist of recognition of the significant scientific research todelivery of the addiction treatment.
